The European Green Deal has identified sustainable alternative fuels as a key means of reducing aviation's climate impact, with the European Commission launching a "ReFuelEU" initiative as a means to bringing about an uptake of such fuels in this sector.
This report makes recommendations for what should be contained in the legislative proposal, which is expected by the end of 2020.
The report calls for a focus on new advanced alternative fuels, in particular synthetic kerosene (efuels), which have the capacity to substantially reduce emissions and be scaled up to meet the fuel demands of the sector.
The ReFuelEU proposal should focus on these fuels, with an ambitious programme combining mandates with financial support, so that Europe’s aviation sector is put on a pathway to net zero emissions.
Half the airlines in the ranking score zero for their lack of uptake of sustainable aviation fuels.
