A group of 10 NGOs, including T&E, has cautiously welcomed a Commission green paper which floats the idea that the shipping industry could be forced to fund an international ship scrapping scheme.
[mailchimp_signup][/mailchimp_signup]The paper talks about ship owners and “possibly other beneficiaries of shipping” paying a binding levy to fund a safe dismantling and recycling scheme. The EU currently hopes the International Maritime Organisation can adopt a global regulation on ship recycling but says the EU should consider its own initiative if IMO makes no progress.
