Environmental groups including T&E have called on the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to set a significant, absolute emissions reduction goal for aviation or risk other bodies and/or countries taking action to limit or reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the sector.
ICAO was given responsibility for cutting international aviation greenhouse gas emissions when the 1997 Kyoto climate accords were agreed. So far no action has been taken while emissions from the sector have been growing rapidly.
