MEPs call for an ESD without loopholes

June 8, 2016

In a letter to the European Commission, seven political groups of the European Parliament have demanded that forests not be used to offset emissions. They state that “LULUCF removals cannot compensate for man-made GHG emissions”. Furthermore, the MEPs demand regular quality checks and compliance mechanisms, especially for forestry, to be included in the upcoming proposal for a new Effort Sharing legislation for 2021-2030.

However, as stated in an article by Reuters, several countries are supporting the idea to use forests as emission offsets, among them Poland and Finland – both countries home to vast forests. These countries argue that by accounting for forestry separately they can cut emissions.

T&E welcomes the initiative by the European Parliament.
