The EU and many European governments are adopting or proposing mandates to bring about the uptake of alternative fuels in the aviation sector.
Mandating the use of Sustainable Advanced Fuels (SAFs) in the aviation sector is the right approach to ensure the deployment of these fuels. However, experience has shown that SAF mandates, when done wrongly, can have disastrous climate and environmental consequences. This briefing details the current state of development of these aviation mandates and highlights areas where national governments risk repeating past mistakes.
