EU transport and energy ministers have called for “more active use of economic instruments” to encourage people to buy more fuel-efficient cars.

The call came as part of a new European energy strategy for transport agreed earlier this month aimed at ensuring that transport is “secure, sustainable and affordable” in the long term.
The strategy has four main priorities: improving energy efficiency, increasing use of alternative and renewable fuels, encouraging energy-aware behaviour among transport users, and integrating transport systems to avoid wasting energy.
The ministers hope for a prominent role for biofuels on roads, and call for an assessment of the potential for renewable fuel in aviation.
