In October 2009 the European Commission published a proposal for reducing CO2 emissions from vans.
T&E believes the law should stick to the Commission's original ambition level of 175 g/km by 2012 and 160 g/km by 2015. A 2020 target should also be set at 125 g/km. Vans should also be equipped with speed limiters set at 100 km/h. This would reduce on-road CO2 emissions by a further 8%.
An explanation of T&E's views on van fuel efficiency can be found in this briefing.
Issues
Cars and CO2
In December 2008, the EU agreed legally-binding CO2 targets for new cars that will come into force in 2015.
Electric Cars
Will electric cars mean less CO2, or are they just another over-hyped technology?
Car industry subsidies
Billions of Euros of public money are being spent on research grants and new car purchase subsidies by governments across the EU.
Tyre standards and labels
In early 2009, the EU agreed legislation to improve the energy efficiency of tyres sold in Europe. In November 2009 a tyre label showing fuel efficiency, safety and noise performance was also agreed.
